Kaiwaka private coastal garden
Where: Takahoa bay
Size: 1/2 acre
Soil & climate: Heavy clay and windy and limestone dry steep banks with surrounding established native bush.
Aspect: south west slope, steep.
Pests & weeds: Over grown existing garden with weeds and grass. Pests being both rabbits and possums.
Design brief.
Pathways leading down to the estuary problematic and unusable. gardens overplanted with weeds overgrown. fruit trees in need of maintenance and accessways throught the steep banks hard to get to the trees to harvest. The clients were new to a property with an extensive garden so was quite overwhelming to know where to start.
My start is always creating pathways that are practical and functional first knowing where to walk defines the areas that wont get planted.
this gave me a great opportunity to build a boardwalk through the entire orchard bank which was unable to get access from an digger which is often the best approach.
New pathways and steps heading all the way down to the water. matting was used for the most part to eliminate spraying and reduce weed problems.
All areas were planted in ground covers using perennials and native plants creating a naturalistic feel.
New fruit trees planted and vege beds. Ongoing projects here have also been redoing the front entrance and rock wall gaining access to the front yard and creating a big flat area where there is potential for camping etc.
